What is radon?

A radioactive gas from the ground.

Radon forms naturally in soil and rock. It can move into a home through cracks, sump pits, plumbing penetrations, floor drains, and gaps in the foundation.

You can’t see it, smell it, or taste it. Health Canada identifies radon as the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.

200

Bq/m³ is Health Canada’s action level.

When your home’s radon level is above 200 Bq/m³, Health Canada recommends taking action to lower it.

Radon testing

A radon test gives you a clear answer.

Radon levels can vary from home to home, even in the same neighbourhood. Testing gives you a real measurement, so you know whether your home is below or above Health Canada’s action level.

What testing tells you

Your radon level
Get a clear reading from your home.
Whether action is needed
Health Canada recommends mitigation when radon is above 200 Bq/m³.
The next step
If your result is elevated, we provide mitigation estimates and explain how to lower it.
Radon mitigation

Mitigation reduces high radon.

If your home tests high, mitigation is the next step. A properly installed system lowers the radon level in the home and runs quietly in the background.

What you can expect

Radon reduced
Our systems are designed to reduce elevated radon by more than 80% in many homes.
Results show quickly
Many homes show much lower readings within 24–48 hours after the system starts running.
Guaranteed below 75 Bq/m³
We stand behind the result with a 5-year warranty on workmanship, parts, and fan.

About ATMOS

I started ATMOS because radon hit close to home.

I did not get into this because I was looking for a random trade to start. I learned about radon because of my own house. Once I saw the numbers, understood what radon actually was, and realized how many families in Calgary have never tested, it honestly bothered me.

It is invisible. You cannot smell it. You cannot feel it. Most people have no idea what their home is sitting at until they test.

After dealing with my own home, I started helping people around me. Neighbours, family, friends — and the more I learned, the more I cared about doing it properly. That is really what ATMOS became: a way to help homeowners get clear answers, understand their options, and fix the problem with work that is done carefully.

We are a small local company, and I personally show up to every mitigation project. Every home is different. Every system has to be thought through. I do not want our work to look careless, and I do not want people feeling confused about what is being installed in their home.

My goal is simple: explain the process clearly, do clean work, use proper materials, and leave the home with radon levels significantly lower than when we arrived.

Questions from Calgary homeowners

Common radon questions.

Clear answers about testing, mitigation, cost, timing, and what to expect.

How do I know if my home has high radon?

The only way to know if your home has high radon is to test. Radon is invisible, odourless, and tasteless. A home can look and feel completely normal and still have elevated radon. A radon test gives you a real number for your home.

How long does radon testing take?

It depends on the goal of the test. Radon levels can fluctuate day to day, week to week, and season to season. A long-term test is 91 days or more and gives the best picture of average exposure. A short-term screening is typically 48 hours and gives a useful starting point.

What level of radon is considered high in Canada?

Health Canada recommends taking action when your home’s radon level is above 200 Bq/m³. Other organizations use lower reference levels, but 200 Bq/m³ is the main Health Canada action level to understand. If your home is above that, mitigation should be considered.

What happens if my home tests high?

The next step is to understand how radon is entering and what type of mitigation system makes sense for your home. We provide a mitigation estimate, walk you through the process, and explain how the system would lower radon to a safer, more acceptable level.

How does radon mitigation actually work?

Radon mitigation lowers the level inside the home by giving radon a controlled path outside. We seal accessible entry points where possible, then install a system that draws radon from beneath the foundation and vents it safely outdoors. In finished basements, some areas may not be accessible without opening walls or finishes, so we focus on what we can properly reach.

How long does installation usually take?

Most radon mitigation installations take about 5 to 8 hours. A finished basement can sometimes be quicker because there are fewer exposed areas to seal. In unfinished basements, we often spend more time sealing accessible cold joints, cracks, sump lids, and other openings. Before we leave, we verify the system is operating properly.

How much does radon mitigation usually cost?

Most straightforward radon mitigation systems are around $2,500 plus tax. More complex homes can range closer to $3,500, especially if there is difficult access, a longer pipe run, or additional work needed. The final cost depends on the home layout and system design.

Can mitigation lower radon completely?

No system can honestly promise to remove radon completely. Radon exists naturally outdoors too, so getting a home to absolute zero usually is not realistic. The goal is to reduce radon as low as reasonably achievable. In many homes, a properly installed system can bring levels into the single digits or low double digits.

How do I know if my system is working?

Every mitigation system should have a manometer on the pipe. It does not show the radon level, but it shows that the fan is creating suction. The best way to confirm performance is follow-up testing or a continuous radon monitor. Small fluctuations are normal, but a sudden jump into the hundreds of Bq/m³ is a reason to have the system checked.

Is radon only a basement problem?

No. Radon usually enters from the lowest level, but it can move to upper floors through air movement, return air systems, stairwells, and the stack effect. Levels are often highest in the basement, but if the basement level is high, the upper floors can still reach dangerous levels.

Will a radon mitigation system be loud?

A properly installed radon mitigation system should not be loud. The radon fan is generally around 25 dB, and in real-world installs the system should usually be very quiet when mounted correctly. We use rubber couplings and make sure the fan, pipe, and brackets are not rubbing or vibrating against the house.

Where does the radon pipe go?

The radon pipe connects near the basement slab and is routed through the basement to the rim joist, which is the area near the top of the basement wall where many utilities exit. In Canada, we typically keep the fan and most piping inside the conditioned space because of the cold climate.

Can I install a radon system myself?

In theory, a homeowner can try, but the hard part is knowing whether the system is actually working properly. A proper mitigation system involves more than pipe and a fan. It requires diagnostics, correct fan sizing, proper sealing, pressure testing, safe routing, and verification after installation.

Do you guarantee the radon level after mitigation?

Yes. ATMOS guarantees post-mitigation radon levels below 75 Bq/m³. In most homes, we see results much lower than that, often in the 10–30 Bq/m³ range. If a system we install does not bring the level below our guarantee, we come back and keep working on it until it does.

What is included in your warranty?

Our radon mitigation systems include a 5-year warranty on workmanship, parts, and the fan from the date of installation. If something fails under normal use during that period, such as a fan issue or a loose connection, we will come back and fix it. The warranty applies to the system as we installed it.

Do new homes in Calgary still need radon testing?

Yes. The age of the home does not reliably tell you whether radon will be high or low. Radon comes from the soil, and levels can vary from one neighbourhood to another — even from one house to the next. Newer homes can sometimes hold radon more effectively because they are built tighter.

Why are radon levels often higher in winter?

Radon levels are often higher during winter because homes are closed up, natural ventilation is reduced, and the stack effect becomes stronger. Warm air rising through the home can create a slight vacuum that draws soil gas into the basement and lower levels.
